A scooter driver remains in critical condition and their passenger was killed after a crash on Florida’s Turnpike in Broward County, local news outlets reported Wednesday.

The crash happened before 3 p.m. Saturday in the southbound lanes at mile market 55. The scooter driver, a 21-year-old Miami man, was in the center lane and switched lanes into the path of a Ford van driven by another man, 27, of Davie.

The van hit the back of the scooter, causing it to become trapped underneath the moving vehicle along with its driver and passenger. The driver of the van pulled to the inside lane, where, officials with Florida Highway Patrol told reporters with The Miami Herald, the passenger became “dislodged.”

A woman canoeing with her husband this week has died after their vessel flipped on top of an 11-foot alligator and the animal attacked in Kissimmee, Florida, officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said.

Cynthia Diekema, of Davenport, has been identified as the woman who was killed in this incident, according to local media. She was 61.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. Tuesday near the mouth of Tiger Creek in Lake Kissimmee, according to reporting from The Miami Herald. The couple was in a 14-foot canoe in a little more than two feet of water when their canoe went over the animal who then thrashed and flipped them. Both husband and wife ended up in the water and the wife landed on the alligator.

A small plane crash-landed in an emergency at a field near an elementary school in Miramar Wednesday, according to WSVN in Miami.

The incident happened just after 1 p.m. near Coconut Palm Elementary School. Two people were on board but were not injured. While the plane did sustain some damage, the school’s property did not.

The school did not go on lockdown when the aircraft – a Piper PA-28, a plane typically used for flight training, air taxi and personal use – landed.

Videos of electric vehicle fires  amid the Hurricane Milton storm surges have spread across social media. 

Tesla, a clean-energy company, sent advisories to customers urging them to move their cars to higher ground ahead of Hurricane Milton. Various insurance carriers also alerted electric vehicle owners to make storage arrangements ahead of the storm, suggesting that people park their cars in protected garages and on higher ground to ward against fires and other damage caused by flooding. 

And it’s not just cars. The Florida Fire Marshal has called the vehicles and other products  “ticking time bombs” due to their lithium-ion batteries.

A girl, 7, who was hit by a car while walking with her mother outside of a Miami pharmacy Monday remains hospitalized in critical condition, officials say. 

The incident happened around 4 p.m. at a Navarro Pharmacy on  SW 32nd Ave. and 22nd St. when a 92-year-old woman in a Nissan SUV allegedly drove onto the sidewalk. Police told local news outlets that the woman was attempting to park her car when she mistakenly stepped on the accelerator. 

The woman was cited for driving recklessly and further charges are possible, police told reporters.
