‘One Moment of Inattention’ Has Severe Consequences: Leesfield & Partners Files Lawsuit on Behalf of a Severely Injured Monroe County Bicyclist

Leesfield & Partners filed a lawsuit this week on behalf of a man who was ejected from his bike following a crash on Stock Island with a commercial truck driver.

“This driver’s one moment of inattention has left my client with life-altering injuries,” said Bernardo Pimentel II, a Trial Attorney at the firm. “This frightening incident has left him in severe pain, causing a disruption to his daily life and happiness.”

The incident occurred just after 2 p.m. on Jan. 13 as our client was approaching the intersection of College Road, where he had the right-of-way to proceed. At the same time, another man behind the wheel of a commercial truck was approaching from the opposite direction and failed to yield, plowing through the intersection and making an illegal left turn. In doing so, this driver hit our client who was then ejected from his bicycle and sent into the air before eventually falling onto the hood of another vehicle. He was then thrown onto the road.

Bicyclist Injured in Crash Near Coconut Grove Over the Weekend, police say

A bicyclist was left critically injured after being hit by a car Sunday morning, according to reporting from The Miami Herald.

The incident happened around 9 a.m. near the 3000 block of Southwest First Avenue near Coconut Grove. The bicyclist, a 53-year-old man, had head injuries and was taken to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Additional details were not immediately available Monday morning.

This University in South Miami is Banning E-Bikes. Here’s Why.

Leesfield & Partners’ Founder and Managing Partner, Ira Leesfield, has been an outspoken advocate for regulating the use of E-bikes and E-scooters throughout communities and now, years later, officials are heeding his warning.

The University of Miami recently announced a plan to tighten restrictions on personal mobility devices on campus. E-bikes and E-scooters will be banned from sidewalks, breezeways, the Foote Green and other pedestrian areas starting Tuesday, Aug. 19. Undergraduate classes for the fall 2025 semester are scheduled to begin on Monday, Aug. 18, according to the university’s online calendar.

The move at the University of Miami was made to tighten these restrictions are a part of a safety campaign started by the school’s Parking and Transportation Department after a “growing number” of pedestrian collisions, blocked emergency routes and battery fires, according to reporting from The Miami Herald. The issues with student drivers flagged in the article — riders distracted by cellphones, blaring music and zooming through pedestrian areas — are all concerns raised by Mr. Leesfield when he first warned against their use in 2019.

Teen E-Bike Rider Chased Down by Enraged Florida Driver. What to Know.

A driver faces multiple charges after police say she chased a minor e-biker for several blocks in North Florida.

Julia Kalthof, 65, of Palm Coast, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill and reckless driving, the Miami Herald reported Friday. She was also cited for driving on a multi-use path and released on a $3,000 bond.

The incident happened on June 7 in Palm Coast, about a 60-mile drive south from Jacksonville, when emergency responders got a 911 call from a man reporting an erratic SUV driver following an e-bike rider on a multi-use path. Luckily, a Good Samaritan in another car blocked Kalthof’s SUV, allowing the 14-year-old biker to escape, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Boy, 6, Killed by Drunk Driver. Now, police say they’ve found the man responsible.

Police have released the name of a man they believe is responsible for the death of a 6-year-old on a bicycle who was killed in a Florida neighborhood on Jan. 18, according to reporting from the Miami Herald.

Francisco Arriola, 53, was charged with DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, DUI 3^rd violation, operating a vehicle without a license causing death and running a stop sign, according to media. The incident happened around 5 p.m. on Jan. 18 in an Apopka mobile home park about a 20-mile drive northwest of Orlando. The child was riding his bike when police say Arriola, in a 2003 Chevy Suburban, ran a stop sign and hit him.

The child was taken to AdventHealth Apopka where he later died from his injuries.

One Dead After Bicycle Crash in Miami This Week. How Many Miami-Dade County Bicyclists Have Died in 2024?

A bicyclist was killed after being hit by a car Tuesday morning in Miami.

The crash, which allegedly left the bicyclist with a severe head injury, happened around 5:30 a.m. near Southwest 27th Avenue and 22nd Street, according to reporting from local news outlets.

The bicyclist, a man in his 50s, was riding his bike in the opposite direction of oncoming traffic, police told reporters. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition and later died from his injuries.

Motorcyclist Knocked Off a Miami Overpass, Killed in Crash, officials say.

A motorcyclist riding near Miami International Airport died after crash that threw them over an overpass where they landed on train tracks, officials told The Miami Herald.

The crash happened on exit 2 of State Road 112 near Miami International Airport. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

The Miami-Dade County Police Department’s Traffic Homicide unit is investigating the crash.

E-Bike Rider in Critical Condition Following West Palm Beach Crash

Miami-Dade Drivers Don’t Know School Traffic Laws, School Bus Cameras Footage Shows. What You Should Know.

Do you have to stop for a school bus in Florida?

In the first two weeks of school, approximately 11,500 Miami-Dade County drivers were cited after footage captured from 950 school district buses caught them disobeying traffic laws.

The cameras were authorized last year to add extra protections for students getting on and off buses during the school year. While laws already exist to ensure drivers who violate these laws are held accountable, the cameras were installed to reinforce the matter. The initiative is a collaboration between the local school district, the Miami-Dade Police Department and BusPatrol, a private company with programs in 17 states that manages the buses and the technology that captures the license plates of cars that illegally pass buses with deployed stop signals.
