Rig Collapsed at Brickell Construction Site. What to Know.

At least four people were injured after equipment at a Brickell worksite collapsed onto multiple cars and a construction box Monday, Sept. 14, according to NBC 6 South Florida.

The incident happened around 8 a.m. when an 85-foot drill rig collapsed on Southeast 12th Street and Brickell Bay Drive. At least two workers, 29 and 27 years old, were in the construction box when the rig fell, trapping them. A 47-year-old construction worker who was operating the drill rig, jumped out of it as it tipped over.

In addition to the construction box, the rig also fell on at least three vehicles, two of which were parked and one that was driving down Brickell Bay Drive. When the driver saw the drill rig falling, she allegedly put her car into reverse. The rig then landed on the SUV’s hood, causing a fire. Thankfully, the driver was able to get out of the vehicle by going through the back of the car, media reported.

All three construction workers and the driver were transported to the hospital with minor injuries, NBC 6 reported.

The Occupational safety and health Administration is investigating the incident. No additional details were available.

Leesfield & Partners

As outlined in state law, employers owe it to their workers to ensure a safe working environment. In its nearly five decades of personal injury law, Leesfield & Partners has seen the most complex and grossly negligent cases of construction worker injuries imaginable. Since it was established, the firm has earned a reputation both statewide and nationally for holding responsible parties accountable and for tirelessly advocating on behalf of injured clients and grieving families.

Our skilled attorneys have secured numerous record verdicts and settlements. These landmark results have not only brought much-needed justice to our clients but have also shaped the landscape of personal injury law in Florida.

If a worker is injured on the job, they are entitled to worker’s compensation, under Chapter 440 of the Florida Statutes. If an injury is incurred on the job, workers are entitled to certain benefits including medical, wage loss, and other benefits no matter whose fault it was.

Contractors who ignore their obligation to workers and flout safety requirements can be found negligent in the case of an employee’s injury.  Florida law, OSHA regulations and common law principles all outline and enforce the employer’s obligation to their employees.

Instead of first lowering the luffing boom, the part of the crane that moves vertically and allows the operator to precisely control the height of the load, and then the main boom, the operator lowered them in reverse. The crane then tipped forward, sending the workers scattering for cover. Our client was hit in the head while wearing his hard hat and knocked to the ground where he lay unconscious. His leg was also crushed in the incident.

Another case handled by the firm involved a construction worker injured when hot tar spilled on him from an open skylight at a construction site. The case was settled for a substantial amount.
