‘Unsafe Practices’ Allegedly Found at University of Miami Organ Agency. Here’s How Leesfield & Partners Has Represented Victims of Medical Negligence for 49 Years.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced this week its plans to decertify Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency, a major organ procurement organization (OPO) in Miami, following its federal investigation that allegedly uncovered years of “unsafe practices.”

The Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency is a division of the University of Miami Health System and is purported to service hospitals across South Florida and the Bahamas. Life Alliance is one of 55 nonprofits designated by the federal government that coordinates the transplantation of organs around the country. They are regulated by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services, according to local media reporting.

In addition to unsafe practices, the investigation revealed “poor training, chronic underperformance, understaffing, and paperwork errors.”

A home health nurse in Florida was accused of taping the mouth of her “nonverbal” patient and repeatedly ripping it off, according to recent reporting from local media.

Nia Ayers, 24, was charged with aggravated abuse of the elderly or disabled after turning herself in on May 7, The Miami Herald reported this week.

The incident, involving an 18-year-old patient who investigators say “is completely unable tot defend herself or cry out for help,” was reported to the St. Cloud Police Department by the patient’s mother. The mother checked home camera footage after noticing cuts and scrapes around the patient’s mouth and on her eyelids.

Florida Doctor Faces Complaints After Man Dies Following Cosmetic Procedure. What to Know.

A doctor is facing complaints after a man was left with holes in his chest muscle and later died due to cosmetic procedure, according to the Florida Department of Health.

The administrative complaint against the Fort Lauderdale doctor claims that “the patient ultimately died as a result” of the liposuction, which allegedly left perforations throughout the 58-year-old’s chest. The procedure involved VASER, a type of ultrasound with vibration amplification of sound at resonance in January 2021. The patient then returned in 2022 “for a repeat,” according to reporting from the Miami Herald this week.

Repetitive VASER-assisted liposuction comes with risks such as infection, bleeding, never damage and scarring, which can cause perforation. The complaint alleges that the doctor “failed to document any discussion” with the patient about the additional risks associated with a repeated procedure.
