One Dead Following Wall Collapse at Coconut Grove Construction Site. What to Know.

A man has died after a wall at a Coconut Grove home under construction collapsed Monday morning.

The man, police told reporters with WSVN News, was pinned beneath the wall when it collapsed near the 2900 block of Southwest 22nd Avenue.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and no other injuries were reported.

Neighbors told reporters that the home had been under construction “for some time.”

Authorities identified the man Monday afternoon as 29-year-old Jorge Esteban Rojas Rodriguez. The home has since been “deemed unsafe” by officials.

Investigators are working to determine what caused the collapse.

Leesfield & Partners is among some of the longest-serving personal injury law firms in Coconut Grove, representing clients in all manner of personal injury.

Leesfield & Partners

For nearly 50 years, Leesfield & Partners attorneys have tirelessly represented injured clients and their grieving families throughout some of the most complex and grossly negligent cases of construction accidents imaginable. Our skilled trial attorneys work diligently to secure the best possible outcome on behalf of every client and have previously secured historic results throughout the state.

If a worker in Florida is injured on the job, they may be entitled to workers’ compensation benefits under Chapter 440 of the Florida Statutes. When an accidental injury occurs on the job, the employer must provide certain benefits — including authorized medical care, lost-wage benefits in qualifying cases, and other benefits — regardless of who was at fault. Employers and contractors still have legal obligations under Florida law, OSHA regulations and established safety standards to maintain a reasonably safe workplace. When contractors or employers disregard required safety measures, they may face enforcement actions, penalties, or — under narrow statutory exceptions — potential civil liability.

While many occupations involve inherent risks, no one should have to face preventable hazards at work. Though not an accident that occurred at a construction site, Leesfield & Partners is representing two police officers who were injured while responding to a shooting at a Doral nightclub. This case is ongoing.

A patron was able to enter the premises with the weapon later used in the shooting due to inadequate security checks. Both officers were patrolling the area on off-duty detail when the shooting began. The incident ultimately resulted in the death of a security guard, the shooter, and the injury of seven others.

One of the officers represented by Leesfield & Partners was shot in the leg and both men struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder as a result of witnessing the horrific incident. This tragic event highlights a significant lapse in ensuring the safety of both the bar’s patrons and Leesfield & Partners’ clients, said Bernardo Pimentel II, a Trial Attorney at the firm.

“Had appropriate security measures been in place, the lives of those present, including [our clients] would not have been put in such peril,” he said.

Previous Construction Accident Cases

In a previous Leesfield & Partners case, the firm obtained a $5 million result for a construction site accident.

In another case, our client was injured due to the negligence of a construction company while on site. The firm obtained a $2.8 million recovery for our client’s permanent injuries in that case.

In a case against a construction supply company that was responsible for our client’s on-site injuries, the firm recovered $887,500.

For a client who suffered severe burns at a construction site, Leesfield & partners attorneys obtained a $862,000 recovery.

In another case, the firm settled with all at-fault parties for a construction worker’s injuries after a crane operator error. In this instance, a crane operator did not follow proper procedure when lowering the machinery for the night. Instead of first lowering the luffing boom, the part of the crane that moves vertically and allows the operator to precisely control the height of the load, and then the main boom, the operator lowered them in reverse. The crane then tipped forward, sending the workers scattering for cover. Our client was hit in the head while wearing his hard hat and knocked to the ground where he lay unconscious. His leg was also crushed in the incident.

A case of a store worker’s fall resulted in a $750,000 recovery.

Leesfield & Partners secured $662,000 for a delivery company worker’s crush injury.

One case handled by the firm involved the tragic death of a construction worker who fell through an open staircase and hit his head. A significant award was secured by the firm for the man’s family for failure to provide fall protection.

Leesfield & Partners obtained a multi-million recovery for a handyman who fell from a ladder while trimming trees on private property in Key West. Our client fell from 15 feet up, landing on his neck. The injuries rendered him a paraplegic, costing him all sensation below the chest.

Another case handled by the firm involved a construction worker injured when hot tar spilled on him from an open skylight at a construction site. The case was settled for a substantial amount.

A previous case involving a worker’s crush injury resulted in $10 million recovered by Leesfield & Partners attorneys.
