The Melissa Institute is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the field of violence prevention and fostering safer communities. Established in memory of Melissa Aptman, a victim of violent crime, the institute operates with a commitment to understanding, addressing, and ultimately preventing various forms of violence. Through a combination of research, education, and community outreach, the Melissa Institute plays a vital role in shaping strategies that promote the well-being of individuals and communities.
In September 2023, Thomas Scolaro became a member of the Melissa Institute’s Board of Directors, which will allow him to even further the institute’s core mission which is to contribute to the prevention of violence in its many manifestations. The organization recognizes that violence, whether interpersonal, youth-related, or domestic, has profound and far-reaching impacts on individuals and communities. Through research initiatives, the organization aims to deepen the understanding of the factors contributing to violence and identify innovative interventions.
Education is a key component, as the institute works to disseminate knowledge and best practices to professionals, educators, and the general public. Community engagement is integral to the mission, as the institute strives to build partnerships that empower communities to actively participate in violence prevention efforts.
