Leesfield Shapiro obtained a $5,687,000 jury verdict this week for a man who suffered the loss of his right leg after he was hit by a negligent driver.
This case was handled by Trial Attorney Carlos A. Fabano.
“This verdict reflects our commitment to our clients and pursuing the accountability that they deserve,” Mr. Fabano said. “This defendant’s negligence resulted in permanent injury to our client and that must be answered for.”
What Happened?
In 2023, our 44-year-old client was crossing the street in Northwest Miami-Dade County in his wheelchair when he was hit by a car owned by a defendant. The driver of the vehicle was speeding and failed to use cation, which would have helped him see our client and react to avoid hitting him.
Following the crash, our client was transported to the hospital where he underwent a below-the-knee amputation on his right leg and several surgeries on his left leg. This was followed by a long and painful course of physical therapy. Not only has our client’s life been forever changed but he also suffered tremendous medical costs as a result of the care he required following this tragic and preventable incident.
“While no outcome can erase these damages, we hope this recovery provides meaningful support as he moves forward,” Mr. Fabano said.

For many clients and grieving families, the civil justice system can seem incredibly daunting with a process that appears to be full of hurdles. As personal injury trial attorneys, it is the job of firms like Leesfield Shapiro to guide these individuals through that process, explaining each step as the case progresses. With seven compassionate and talented trial attorneys, Leesfield & Partners gives each client the attention and compassion that they deserve as they navigate some of the most emotionally challenging moments of their life in the pursuit of justice for the damages they have suffered.
Leesfield Shapiro has earned a reputation both state and nationwide for obtaining record and historic verdicts and settlements on behalf of injured clients. One such verdict involved a family that suffered the loss of their daughter due to a drunk driver who was speeding down the wrong side of I-95. The family was on their way to drop their daughter off at the airport so that she could attend her medical school’s orientation. She was 23.
Also in the car was the family’s 21-year-old son. As a result of this tragic collision, this young man was left with permanent brain and orthopedic injuries that left him wheelchair-bound, unable to speak, and requiring round-the-clock care.
The jury awarded over $95 million to the family with $57 million allocated toward the son and $38 million to the parents.
“The result in this case shows what hard work and creative lawyering can do for clients with devastating injuries,” said Ira Leesfield, the firm’s Founder and Managing Partner. “Along with co-counsel Aaron Davis, we are happy to settle with two defendants and to obtain this record verdict for them”
Previous Cases
Previously, Leesfield Shapiro handled a case involving a truck company whose employee was responsible for a tragic crash that injured two girls and killed one other. The three girls were on their way to the library when the truck driver made an illegal U-turn on the turnpike, turning directly into the girls’ path.
Leesfield Shapiro obtained an over $8.6 million settlement and a wrongful death arbitration award of $7,995,467.
In the case of a woman who was walking back to her office following a midday break, Partner Justin B. Shapiro secured the maximum recoverable amount set forth in the defendant’s insurance policy limits. The woman was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk when a pickup truck driver made an illegal left turn, claiming to not have seen her. Injuries to our client included skull fractures and brain hemorrhages in addition to injuries to her left leg.
A $6 million settlement was secured for the client in that case.
A case involving another trucking company whose employee was in a crash that injured two Leesfield Shapiro clients, the firm secured a $5 million recovery.
A $2.8 million recovery was obtained in a suit against a trucking company for a client injured by a commercial truck driver.
A motorcycle crash that involved the injury of our client due to the actions of a trucking company employee resulted in the firm obtaining a $2 million recovery for our injured client.
The firm also obtained a $1.8 million recovery for the family of a client who was killed in a tragic crash due to the negligence of a trucking company’s employee.
In a case that is similar in that an employee was involved in a crash with our clients during the course and scope of his employment, Leesfield Shapiro obtained a $1 million settlement for a grieving family. That case involved a family who lost their 8-year-old daughter in Lee County after a delivery company’s driver slammed into them from behind while they were stopped in traffic.
“This settlement holds all negligent parties accountable for their role in the devastating crash, ensuring that the family’s immense pain and suffering is not overlooked,” said Trial Attorney Bernardo Pimentel II, the attorney who handled the case. “Our clients’ lives have been deeply impacted by this tragedy, and our hearts remain with them and their loved ones as they continue to heal.”
